Summer season underway - 27th Sep 2018

Summer season underway It's game on: the summer walk season kicks off on Monday, 1st October, 2018.

What's new this season? Well, we've tweaked a few things, for example the Heritage Highlights Walk now starts at 2pm and only takes one hour. It becomes a great sightseeing option for Cruise pax, who will have ample time to do the walk and return to their ship.

The big change - and one that should interest visitors and locals alike - is the introduction of the Vogel Street Walk, a dedicated walk through Dunedin's warehouse precinct. Again it's only one hour, and it covers a relatively small area - which is mostly flat. But it's really exciting, as there has been so much positive change down there over the last decade - even over the last 12 months. This walk starts at 9am at Vogel Street Kitchen (76 Vogel Street). Like all our walks, it is offered daily EXCEPT SUNDAYS.

Dunedin is looking a treat just now, and there's every indication it'll be a bumper visitor season. Might be a great opportunity to do one of these walks now, before it gets busy!

See you on the streets!

2018 Winter Schedule - 22nd Aug 2018

2018 Winter Schedule Techically speaking, it is still winter in Dunedin - though the weather has been mild and there is already blossom about.

The following departures will be offered through the remainder of our winter season (ie. until the end of September 2018): the Vogel Street Walk (which departs from Vogel Street Kitchen at 9am) and the Old Town Walk (which departs from the Dunedin i-Site at 10.30am). These walks are offered daily except Sundays.

Contact us if your group would like to do a walk outside these times - we'll see what we can do.

ProGuides NZ - 21st Jun 2018

ProGuides NZ ProGuides New Zealand is the professional association of tour guides in New Zealand. Members are scattered across this beautiful land, so it was great to catch up with a number of them in Dunedin at the Association's recent AGM.

Here I am leading the crew on the Vogel Street Walk, which showcases the exciting redevelopment occurring right now in Dunedin's characterful warehouse precinct.

Business Innovation Award - 20th Jun 2018

Business Innovation Award Martin McDowall championed Dunedin, through his shop, his promotion of local events and through his contributions to DunedinHOST, our local visitor-industry body. So it meant a lot to me when City Walks won the DunedinHOST Martin McDowall Small Business Innovation Award in 2017.

That's almost a year ago! I've taken a belated photo of the trophy before returning it so that it can be engraved with the name of 2018's winner.

Thanks are due to Martin and Evelyn McDowall.

No walks until Tuesday 5th June - 27th May 2018

No walks until Tuesday 5th June City Walks will hibernate for a week and attend to other tasks. Unfortunately that means there'll be no walks in the meantime.

The good news is that we shall return refreshed, strap our boots on and hit the streets again: our first walk back will be the Vogel Street Walk, departing 9am from Vogel Street Kitchen (76 Vogel Street), Tuesday 5th June.

Also next week we'll roll out our winter schedule. Watch this space!

The walks take 45 mins - 1 hour, starting and finishing at Vogel Street Kitchen (76  Vogel Street). Departure is at 9am, Monday - Saturday. The walk focuses on the fall and rise of Vogel Street, and recent developments across our characterful warehouse precinct.

Vogel Street Walk starts soon - 26th Apr 2018

Vogel Street Walk starts soon From May 1st, 2018, we're introducing a new walk, called the Vogel Street Walk. A short walk, just 45 mins - 1 hour duration, it will detail the fall and rise of Vogel Street - and the general (re)development happening across Dunedin's characterful warehouse precinct. Certainly we'll place the area in historical context, but the focus will very much be on recent/ current/ future development down there.

The walks will be offered daily except Sundays, and depart at 9am. We'll start and finish the walks at Vogel Street Kitchen (76 Vogel Street). Coffee is not included, but you might choose to grab one before or after the walk - at Vogel Street Kitchen or one of the several other great cafes on the street.

For a limited time, the walks will cost just $20 (adults)/ $5 (children). As with our other walks, reservations should be made via our Contact  page or at the Dunedin i-Site Visitor Centre. Tickets must be purchased before the walk. Your guide can accept cash, but EFTPOS or credit card payment must be made at the Dunedin Visitor Centre (corner of George Street and the Octagon).

No walks ANZAC Day - 23rd Apr 2018

No walks ANZAC Day 25 April (Wednesday) is ANZAC Day, the day New Zealanders and Australians set aside to commemorate the sacrifices made during the tragic Gallipoli campaign in World War One.

It's a public holiday, so there'll be no walks happening. There will be a dawn service at Dunedin's Cenotaph (Queen's Gardens), at approx. 6.15am. In fact, there'll be services at dawn, or other times, at almost every settlement across New Zealand. Visitors are welcome to attend these services. Those who attend the Dunedin service may go to Toitu Museum afterwards for a warming cup of tea.
